Editorial Review: Description: To be or not to be? To act or not to act? The questions are the same to Joe, a struggling (read: jobless) actor whose every sinew and synapse cries out to perform and to soften the blow of not landing a part in a megabudget sci-fi movie. So in the stalwart (read: desperate) tradition of actors everywhere, Joe vows to put on a show, a special (read: even more desperate) version of the greatest play in the English tongue. Writer/director Kenneth Branagh serves up Hamlet on wry with this salute to dyed-in-the-wool and other woolly-brained thespians. Michael Maloney (Truly Madly Deeply) portrays Joe, maxing out credit cards and his wits to realize his dream. Does he succeed? Well, with Richard Briers (Branagh's Hamlet), Joan Collins (Dynasty), Nicholas Farrell (Chariots of Fire), Absolutely Fabulous alumna Jennifer Saunders and Julia Sawatha and more joining Maloney, one thing's certain. The show must go on! Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Why isn't this out on DVD?This is an excellent film - just the right mix of humor, fun, drama, and intensity. I have several copies of the VHS version and have been looking for the DVD...but no. It boggles the mind that so much trash is churned out on DVD, yet good entertainment like "A Midwinter's Tale" is consigned to VHS. Go figure. Please release this on DVD. Rating: - good film - bad qualityThis is a wonderful gem of a film. Unfortunately, I was unable to find it in a DVD and the VHS copy I did obtain has very bad sound. Rating: - A gem that I stumbled onto by accident"Crouch we here awhile and lurk." I'll have to remember that the next time I forget my lines on stage! This movie is a delight, and features several of Kenneth Branagh's (apparently) favorite actors that a lot of us recognize by face, if not by name. Not only is it cleverly scripted (albeit fast-moving, so you'll have to stay focused so as not to miss out on the wit!) but it is well-acted and the black-and-white filming gives it a unique perspective. The only misstep, as far as casting, was using ... Read More Rating: - The Perfect Holiday MovieCall me Scrooge. But I've never been one for the fake sentimentality of seasonal movies. This, however, is the greatest Christmas film of all time -- a fine movie, great acting, real human warmth. Not maybe for children. But if I want to feel Chirstmasy, this story of doing Hamlet in the provinces is where I go. Pity in America it can't go by its real title "In the Bleak Midwinter," since too many of us don't know this beautiful (tho sadly titled) carol. Get this film back in print. Sell it framed ... Read More Rating: - A funny, heartwarming comedyThis movie was recommended to me in discussion forum that I belong to. As soon as I rented and saw it, I knew I had to buy a copy for myself. Anyone who has ever been involved with amateur theatrics--and even those who don't--will identify with this warm and human story about a group of flawed actors trying to put on a cut rate production of Hamlet--as a Christmas fundraiser, no less. The story is by turns humorous and poignant and the ensemble cast is fantastic. I really can't say enough good things about ... Read More Browse for similar items by category: |
